About the Author
A Career Guidance Resource for Career Educators, Teachers, School Counselors, Parents & Youth Leaders
This resource was developed for Community Education Partners (CEP), a nationally respected education company that partners with schools to get disruptive and low-performing students back on track. It was coauthored by Dr. Deana Costner, CEP’s Florida Liaison, and a highly respected, talented educator.
The resources are valuable to professionals in a variety of settings (even though it was primarily designed for teachers): school career guidance programs, youth groups (Junior Achievement, FFA, 4-H, Scouts), Career Day . . . .
It was designed as a one-week program, culminating in students’ meeting with the school counselors to choose classes for the next year. In addition to the lesson plans for teachers for each of the five days, there are four handouts (that can be used independently, in different situations):
- Rating Your Foundation Skills (4 pgs.): Students rate themselves on the 17 Foundation Skills. These are the skills all workers need in the 21st century (described at the Career Key website, and in the author’s book, Job Skills for the 21st Century, A Guide for Students).
- Student Direction Sheet (1 pg.): Takes students, step-by-step from accessing the Career Key website, and taking the Career Key survey, through exiting the website.
- Holland Personality Types (1 pg.): Describes Holland’s six personality types.
- Student Review Handout (1 pg.): Students name “three jobs you might want in the future,” list five Foundation Skills in which they are strong, and three they want to improve; and, based on their work, they list the classes they “need to take next year.”
