A2:  Develop Employment Readiness

  1. Acquire employability skills such as working on a team, problem-solving and organizational skills
    Students:
  • Read and discuss Job Skills All Workers Need (The Foundation Skills)
  • Download and print this 2-page copy of the Foundation Skills at the first page of this module.  Counselors or educators may make multiple copies to distribute for nonprofit purposes.
  • Rate their Foundation Skills and discuss ways of learning these skills
  • Purchase "Choosing Classes in High School" from the Career Key eBookStore;  in 30 minute teacher-led classroom sessions:  students are introduced to the Foundation Skills, assess themselves and, then, relate the skills to the classes they are taking.
  • Read and discuss, Identify Your Skills and Make them Work for You

  1. Apply job readiness skills to seek employment opportunities
  • See #1 above.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge about the changing workplace
    Students:
  1. Learn more about the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees
  2. Learn to respect individual uniqueness in the workplace
    Students:
  • See #1 above regarding the Foundation Skills, especially the part about "People Skills".

  1. Develop a positive attitude toward work and learning
    Students:
  • See #1 above regarding the Foundation Skills, especially the parts about "Personal Qualities" and "Self-Esteem."

  1. Understand the importance of responsibility, dependability, punctuality, integrity and effort in the workplace
    Students:
  • See #1 above regarding the Foundation Skills, especially the part about "Personal Qualities."

  1. Utilize time- and task-management skills
    Students:

    Note:
    Emphasize that all workers, at all levels of employment, need the Foundation Skills. These are not entry-level or job-readiness skills. Everyone needs them. And, all schools need to teach them. We have learned from teacher workshops, that teachers are enthusiastic about them, once they understand their importance and how they relate to what they are teaching.
